Electrochemical potential measurement is a non-destructive test of fundamental importance for a submerged marine structure. It is through this test that the potential of the structure in relation to the corrosive medium (electrolyte) is determined in order to assess the condition of the metallic material, that is, whether or not it is protected from corrosion.

Corrosive processes cause undesirable changes that are highly harmful to any equipment. When this equipment is installed in very aggressive environments, such as salt water, corrosion has a very significant effect on the integrity of these installations. The premature deterioration of the material of a marine structure can affect its useful life or else generate stress concentration points that can lead the material to fatigue, causing massive material damage, environmental damage or irreparable personal injury.

Electrochemical potential measurement is a fundamental test to monitor the cathodic protection system of a marine unit.
